Whirlwind Artillery Tanks || Marines Malevolent, 2nd Company || Third War for Armageddon
If there was any one event that the Marines Malevolent are the most well known for, it would have to be their involvement at Hive Hades during the Third War for Armageddon. The Malevolents deployed Whirlwind anti-personnel tanks to destroy an ork horde, and it just so happened that there was an Imperial refugee camp in the way - leading to thousands of civilian casualties. Whoops. And while the campaign I'm playing in doesn't feature any civilians (to my knowledge), it does feature a lot of orks, so I knew I had to include the iconic heralds of collateral damage in my force.
These are mostly stock from the classic plastic kit, however I did swap the front plates out for the deimos-pattern variant from the Horus Heresy range. I think it gives them a bit more of a retro feel, and leans into the 'patchwork' armoury of the chapter. I had a bit of fun adding some tank crew too, to help differentiate between each vehicle.
Once again I spent a while deliberating on how to include the black livery on these tanks. I ended up copying the black diagonal stripes from the Horus Heresy Scorpius Missile Tank box art, and added some hazard stripes to the top hatches. I spent way too long overthinking the transfers too. I ended up keeping it fairly simple, with the Heavy Support icon inspired by the Insignium Astartes, with company number on its left and unit/vehicle number on the right. Maybe No.IIIs red skull indicates that it's a command tank, too.
Otherwise, these were painted largely the same as the Land Speeder. I did accidentally spray isopropyl alcohol onto parts of them instead of white spirits at one point, so a few details got melted away and had to be repainted late in the process (hopefully it's not too noticeable…). But I think I'm pretty happy with how they turned out! I hope you like them.
With all of the force's vehicles now complete, next will be the infantry. Stay tuned!
