Apothecary Leijon || Marines Malevolent, 2nd Company || Third War for Armageddon
The Marines Malevolent might not be the most compassionate chapter out there, but they still need someone to salvage precious gene-seed and pump marines full of combat drugs. So naturally I had to include an Apothecary in this force!
This guy's got quite a few parts to him. Like a lot of the other marines in this army, his torso and legs are prints designed by Maocha Minis. I really like the medic's smock that the newer Apothecary kits have featured, so I went for one of Maocha's robed designs. The shoulder with the Apothecarion symbol is a spare I had from my 30k Apothecaries (which are still wip…).
I really liked the little scene from the Primaris Apothecary, so I used the arm holding the extracted progenoid gland from that kit, and mounted him atop an era-appropriate Astartes casualty. The head, arm, backpack and belt tubes are all from the 4th ed Command Squad Apothecary. I've been hanging on to those bits for several years now, so it was pretty exciting to finally use them!
I considered a few options for how I would paint him. Most modern depictions of Apothecaries have them clad in all white, usually with a single shoulder in their chapter colours. But this is a nostalgia driven army, so I cracked open my 5th ed Space Marine Codex and found some examples of how the studio painted their Apothecaries fifteen years ago, and used that as my reference.
I had this idea in my head of his medic smock being all dirty and bloodstained, so I tried to stipple on a few brownish-red splotches to represent flecks of dried blood. I was a little scared of overdoing it, but looking at it now I think it could have used a little more splattering. Lastly came the dead Space Marine on the base… I figured painting it as a rival chapter rather than another Malevolent would be perfectly in character. And I mean, who else was I really gonna pick to be that rival chapter :3
That's the last of my Marines Malevolent for now! I actually painted this guy like two months ago, but I've just been too busy to take any photos until now. But here's the full force all together!!
I think I'm gonna be working on more Heresy stuff next, but I would like to return to the Malevolents in the future. I've got a couple more classic firstborn units that I've always wanted to paint in mind.
